The second component of Megan’s Law, Community Notification, allows the States discretion to establish criterion for disclosure, but compels them to make private and personal information on registered sex offenders available to the public. This section assists law enforcement in investigations, establishes legal grounds to hold know offenders, deters sex offenders from committing new offenses and also offers citizens information they can use to protect children from victimization. ... In many states there are different versions of Megan’s Law. It is predominantly the exact law in all fifty states 3 however, some states take it a little further. ... Under Kentucky’s ideal version of Megan’s Law, registered offenders in the Commonwealth of Kentucky are placed in one of two categories based on their crime.
