The beautiful mysteries of love and marriage have not always been known. Its meaning has evolved over the time, the Bible being a sacred document, which demonstrates the guidelines for this exclusive relationship. The Color Purple by Alice Walker portrays three very distinct marriages. The correlation between Celie and Mr _____ shows the reader the twisted abusive side that the Bible doesn?t condone. On the contrary as the book progresses we learn about the union between Sofia and Harpo, unlike that of Celie and Mr.____ this relationship began with mutual love and respect. A third marriage introduced in the novel, Reverend and his wife, is unlike the previous two marriages it has no division in the power of controlling money. The ?union? of Celie and Mr._____ diverts from the true meaning of marriage, which does not subjugate women, as manly wrongly misinterpret. The following passage from Ephesians 5: 21-23, does not justify Mr.______ daily rapes, or the routine physical, mental, and verbal abuse that breaks the spirit of Celie.
