Good Old Days
?The Good Old Days?
Marilyn Smith, my grandmother, was born and raised in Newport, Kentucky, and now lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a child she lived with her parents, sisters, and grandparents. She had 2 sisters and one of them died at an early age of whooping cough. Her house was fairly decent for her time. It consisted of 7 rooms, and 7 people lived in her house. Kids would take bathes two times a week. Most of the time people in these days only used bar soap for washing their hair and everything else.
My grandmothers parents car was a Packard, which was a stick shift, and was made in the early 1930?s. Like some other kids her age, my grandmother was 16 years old when she began driving. Gasoline prices were about 15 cents a gallon, and the prices of cars averaged about $900. If there wasn?t a car around to drive, ?street cars? were available. A ?street car? is a transportation unit that runs on tracks and is powered by wires. These ?street cars? were safe and affordable, paying only 5 cents for a ride. I was surprised to hear that adults did not ride bicycles around commonly for transportation to and from work.
Some similarities between my grandmothers? time and my time are the pastimes and some of the technologies. When my grandmother was younger, she went to dances, movies, and sporting events. My friends and I usually do the same things. Back in the 1930?s light bulbs were very common among houses just like they are today, and they also had water heaters. Another thing I didn?t realize was how the use of cosmetic materials is just like today?s uses. Gas was used for cooking, refrigerators were used for preserving, the trash was picked up by trash men, and food was delivered to your house. Before now, I didn?t understand the good old days were somewhat the same but not as advanced as we are today.
