Kindred
Kindred is a science-fiction novel based on slave narratives which examines different roles people played on the southern slave-owning plantations. The novel graphically shows the hardships that slaves faced daily, and gets into the psychology of not only the slave, but also the slave master. All degrees of separation are taken away from Dana as she discovers the horrors of slavery first hand. S The intersection of class, race, and gender play a role in the formation of all characters in this story. When Dana makes the transformation from the present to the 19th century, the intersection of her class, race, and gender changes drastically. In the present, Dana is a middle class African-American woman. When transplanted into the 19th century, her race and gender remain, but her class changes drastically as she experiences what it was like for her ancestors during slavery times.
