New York has been written about by many authors throughout American history, each
having his or her personal views of the city exposed through the many elements that have made
each essay unique. ... A comparitive analysis of Washington Irvings
and Charles Dickens essays on the subject of New York will highlight the elements each uses in
their works and may give us insight into how New York was perceived int he early 19th century.
Irvings essay From A History of New York- published in 1809, perhaps contains the most
complexity of the two.
