One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich

A hero can be defined as a man of extraordinary courage, one who performs great deeds, or one who is marked by great courage. Ivan Shukhov, the main character from the novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, and Winston Smith, the main character from the novel 1984, are both considered to be heroic characters. To be a hero, one must have physical or emotional strength. ... Ivan Denisovich shows to have both physical and emotional strength over the course of the novel. ... Almost a happy day.” (158) This is at the end of Ivan’s day when he is reviewing how his day went. He realizes that he has a wonderful day and that helps to keep his emotional strength up. ... Being late can be a serious offense in one way or another but fortunately, he is not punished because there is someone else who is later than he is.
