Baptism has been practiced over the centuries as a sacred rite that consecrates a believer in the Christian faith. Some believe that if a person is not baptized, then he or she cannot enter into heaven, which is why babies are frequently baptized. In the city of Corinth, the Christians there apparently practiced baptism, but they did not believe in the resurrection of the body. Paul’s letter to them, in 1 Corinthians 15:29, addresses the conflict of their actions and their beliefs. 1 Corinthians 15:29 says, “Otherwise, what will those people do who receive baptism on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?” First of all, the phrase “what will those people do” could take on two different meanings.
