The religion of Islam arose in the Arabian peninsula sometime at the beginning of the seventh century. Islam’s prime representative, a man by the name of Muhammed, was a social activist who “criticized Meccan materialism, paganism, and unjust treatment of the poor and needy. ... Islam particularly grew the most during the first one hundred years after Muhammed’s death. But why is it that Islam spread so quickly? ... Islam quickly spread from Mecca to Medina to Alexandria and within 120 years all of the Southern Mediterranean on up to Spain.
It was not only the strength of this binding religion but the weakness of the adversaries that helped spread Islam.
