Polytheism and Monotheism

1. Compare Polytheism with Monotheism. Polytheism was first emphasized by the earliest civilization during the Paleolithic Age. The believed of many gods began with the nomadic tribes and was passed on to future generations like the Egyptians and Greeks. Polytheistic people believed that there was more than one god, and that each god corresponded to certain rulings in life and nature. Some of these gods were not eternal and had the same urges and needs as humans. Unlike polytheism, monotheism beliefs are the exact opposite. Monotheistic people believe in one god only and that it was the creator of the world and ruler of everything. Hebrews were one of the first monotheistic tribes in western civilization; even Egypt was monotheistic for a time. The pharaoh Amenhotep IV emphasized monotheism to the people with the god Aton, even though it failed after his death. Monotheism was not really popular at the time until the rise of Christianity.
