only daughter
“Only Daughter” -A short summary First published in Glamour, Sandra Cisneros’ essay, “Only Daughter” describes with remarkable detail what it is like to be the only daughter among six brothers in a Mexican-American family. She grew up in Chicago, Illinois and presently teaches and writes. While growing up, Cisneros spent a lot of time alone. Her brothers thought it was “beneath” them to play with a girl in public. This time alone allowed her time to “think, imagine and read” to prepare herself for her newfound passion- writing.
