Raymond Monaghan 5B Homelessness How would you feel if a drug and/or alcohol addiction drove you out of your own home, no money and a unbearable craving what one must give into and you must get back in touch? Feeding this craving will only make it worse when you cannot feed it. You would be reduced to begging in the streets, not knowing where the next meal will come from, reducing you to the lowest level in human life. What would you do? Drug and alcohol addiction or abuse is one of the most common factors into making a person homeless. Worse yet homelessness is on the increase: Statistics issued by the housing charity, Shelter Scotland, show that the numbers applying as homeless in Glasgow increased by 136% in the past 10 years, from 5361 to 12,665, below are various facts to this increasing cancers of the modern world. Homeless people are 11 times more likely to suffer from depression; anxiety or nerves than the general population, up to half of all those sleeping rough suffer from a serious mental health problem. This shows that almost 50% of homeless people are under government care at some point in their lives, it shows that the government are not doing enough to tackle this problem, is people were successfully treated they could have been useful members of society.
