The problems that Riel would protest against started in 1821, when the North West Company merged with its competitor the Hudson Bay Company into one. ... The Métis looked for a leader to help them obtain the democracy they were obliged to have. The leader that would help them achieve this would be Louis Riel. Louis Riel led the Métis in protest against the government to try and take their rights back. The protests were not friendly though as Louis Riel and the Métis people led violent protests on the government.
