Two Theories of Early Sociology
Two theories of early Sociology There are two theories that are involved with macro-sociology, or sociology that is concerned with society as a whole, and the patterns that shape it on a broad scale: the structural-functional theory, the preferred theory through the mid 1900’s, and the social conflict theory, more popular in recent decades. Both theories are involved with dynamics about society as a whole, (both look at larger pictures) and speak in terms of “family”, “class”, “race”, etc. Differences are apparent in social systems of the two, in that in a structural functional theory, the system is coherent, interdependent and cooperative, involves large segments of the population such as the family (usually central in this paradigm)with components such as sports, the military, economics, healthcare, governments, education, etc.
