Dance Critique

I do not like Modern dance very much, however; this was a very nice performance. There was a variety of dances, lighting, costumes, and attitude. I thought the first dance was exciting and entertaining. The second dance, "by a thread", was confusing to me. I was not quite sure what it was about, and the costumes were bland. Jennifer's dance was interesting. It is amazing creativity that she made up the dance by breathing into the microphone. "Masculine Effect" did not interest me very much. The India dance was neat, because I am learning about India in my Philosophy class. The last dance was very creative, with all the technology and the cellist.
The length of the performance was a good length. It was not too long, and it was not too short. The intermission was in a good spot to give us a stretch break. The lighting was awesome. It gave all of the dances a great effect, especially the one where Ursula Payne was dancing towards the light. The spot lights shinned downwards to accent the main part of the dance, so we would focus on that dancer instead of their surroundings. The costumes were plain, so they did not take away from the dancing. "Nritya" had a fancy costume, but I believe that is because it is how the people from India dress for their cultural dances.
I especially liked "Nritya" which was choreographed and performed by Jaya Mani. The music was traditional. The dancing was cultural, not modern or ballet or jazz. It represented the culture from India, the way they dance and express their selves. I think Mani was trying to give us insight on her culture and the way they dance compared to us in the United States. I did not understand the meaning of the dance so much, but I was impressed with it. It was so different then any of the other dances. It is also different then anything in our culture. Like at weddings, we do the Chicken Dance. In India, they do in depth dances like what Mani demonstrated. The bells on...
