Brent Staples’ essay “Black Men and Public Space” and Bill Maxwell’s article “Denial Gets Us Nowhere” deal with the racial stereotyping. Racism is alive and well, and obviously both Staples and Maxwell intend to educate people about the racial problems still evident in today’s society. Maxwell’s writing is bitter and subjective, whereas Staples writing is more of a psychological perspective and fairly objective. Maxwell writes from a very personal, emotional reaction to seemingly everyday occurrences. Staples writes from a personal point of view, not merely from emotional reactions. The two pieces of writing may be very similar in topic; however, in every other aspect, including tone and point of view, the two pieces of writing closely resemble polar opposites. The core parallel between Staple’s essay and Maxwell’s article is the general topic.
