Egeskov Castle

Egeskov, Europe’s best preserved island fortress, was built in 1554 when Frands Brokenhuus cut down an oak forest to build the castle in the middle of a lake. Egeskov literally means “oak forest” because it rests on a foundation of thousands of these upright oak pilings. ... This castle has an interesting history and is now one of Denmark’s biggest tourist attractions. When Egeskov was built in 1554, political unrest, the Reformation, and the Count’s Feud made many landowners build their houses as well-protected castles. ... Also during his period, the castle was developed into an up-to-date model farm with its own dairy, power station and railway track.
