Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe's The Cask of Amontillado

From commencement of The Cask of Amontillado, by Edgar Allan Poe, the sinister plot of the narrator are apparent. Montresor (the narrator) reveals his passionate hatred for his enemy, Fortunato. Montresor believes that his revenge upon Fortunato is”immolation” and that he is justified for being able to murder him. Although, the story does not actually detail what happened between them. The story is biased in the sense that it is told from only Montresor’s point of view. This makes it easy to discard Fortunato’s innocence. But, an un-biased reader will take that into account before making any foolish assumptions. Based upon Montresor’s personality and Fortunato’s responses, it would appear that Montresor was merely a psychotic killer acting out of his own frustration. Beginning in the third paragraph, Montresor had carefully planned his unsuspecting opponent’s demise. He admitted to having resolved any feuds between them and continued to be his friend. He only did this so that Fortunato would not suspect anything. Montresor must have considered every aspect of the situation. He knew exactly what to say to Fortunato.
