Medieval universities were the outcome of the teachers to form a society to restrict the power of the chancellor to sell or grant licenses to teach for the unqualified pupil. They established universities with the approval of the chancellor so that they could grant certificates to the qualified students. Some of these certificates are masters, bachelors, and doctors. Colleges were initially intended to be as residence halls for the students, later these halls were used to sponsor lectures approved by the church officials and thus resolved into institutions independent of universities. As these institutions became independent, they issued their own certificates.
