THE NEED FOR PLASTIC CHAIN-LINKS
Many products made out of traditional materials like wood, metal and ceramic had to be replaced, to be made out plastics. ... The chain links that are commonly made out of metals have the following draw-backs:
1) Poor corrosion resistance
2) Need secondary operation such as welding
3) Heavy in weight
4) Lead time is high
The above-mentioned problems can be eliminated if plastic materials are to be used for the chain-links. ... The first step was to measure the various dimensions of the existing metal chain-link. Once all the dimensions were known, the dimension that is required for the plastic chain-link had to be decided. ... The Process plan for the mould is as follows:
Product : Chain
Mould steel : Hot die steel
Operation I : Rough milling
Operation II : Cutting
Operation III : Rough milling
Operation IV : Fine milling
Operation V : Grinding
Operation VI : Profile milling
Operation VII : Sprue and gate machining
Operation VIII: Drilling
Since single piece of raw material was after the first operation of raw milling, the piece had to be cut into four single pieces using power hacksaw.
