James Joyce was born in Dublin, Ireland, but lived his entire adult life in the native land of Ireland. Joyce attained his education from schools that trained young men for the priesthood. Joyce saw himself as a religious and artistic rebel, so after graduation in 1902 he fled to Paris. Returning, to Dublin because of his mother’s fatal illness, Joyce met his wife, Nora Barnacle. She was an uneducated Irish country girl. James Joyce struggled to support a growing family. Their living quarters were dreary and he often taught classes in Berlitz language schools to make ends meet. Joyce never again lived in Dublin, but he continued to write about it.
