Thomas Black Bull

The novel, When Legends Die, by Hal Borland, is a story about Indian culture and heritage. In the story a young boy’s father kills a man and they are forced to live in the wild where he grows up. His parents die and he is forced to live on the reservation and learn the new ways of the people. He makes no friends and is sent to solitary work as a horse and goat herder. He meets Red Dillion, a low down betting scoundrel, who teaches him to be a bronco rider. After Red dies, Meo takes over the little farm where Tom Black Bull, the boy, is living between shows. Tom is injured on a horse returns home to go back to the old ways when he is an elderly man.
