Frederick Bailey (Douglass) was born around 1817 into slavery on a plantation owned by Colonel Lloyd. Colonel Lloyd’s clerk, Captain Anthony,was Frederick’s mother’s owner and, most likely, Frederick’s father: “My

Frederick decribes life on the farm as hard with little food, severe punishments like beatings, whippings, and the occasional shootings, little clothes, and exhaustion from being overworked.
