A Welcome Discovery • Look for Onatak the fawn • Find wolf tracks with the fawn tracks • Get very depressed • The wolves have eaten Onatak • see two dogs wandering around • They walk closer and give them some meat • The boys then go home • leaves a trail of meat leading to the cabin • Each night they leave meat on the doorstep and each morning it is gone • They make a cage to trap the dogs at their doorstep • The boys did not think ahead of what would happen after they caught the dogs so they are worried • The dogs crawled into the cabin • the boys busy themselves about odd jobs paying no attention to the dogs • Jaime earns one of the dog’s respect Summaries Day 9 May 7 The Great One Of The Barrens • Boys train dogs to pull sled • Go back and forth to the stone igloo • Take a little food from it • Decide to make a three-day hunting trip • The dogs begin to smell something • The boys find a moving shape • Giant bear comes out of nowhere • The bear begins to chase Awasin • Jaime runs back to him as fast as he can • Hurts his lungs in the process from breathing in the frigid arctic air • As Jaime collapses he says “Take the gun” • Awasin shoots the bear • Jaime’s chest hurts a lot • Awasin Describes the story with the bear • The boys go home with half of the giant bear pelt • They also take home a paw Escape • November comes • Daylight begins later • Boredom creeps up on them again • They try to play some games that Awasin learned When he was a child but the boys soon get bored of these • They resort to telling stories • Jaime invents new things to cook • They start to think of back home • The boys are reminded that Christmas is coming soon • Kill two birds with the bow And snare another two rabbits • Clear warm weather starts to come (but only a glimpse of spring) • Thinking of chances of escape • They have packed all the food • Left the bow, axe and all of their other equipment except the gun • Sad for leaving the cabin • Thinking that they will “Come Back Someday” • The trip will take three weeks but there is no way they will get good weather for three weeks in the middle of December • They are so excited about the good weather and go a little crazy.
