In the novel “The Wife of Martin Guerre” by Janet Lewis Bertrande conveys different kinds of love to Martin, the impostor Arnaud, Sanxi, Pierre Guerre even her own soul and beliefs. Her love for Martin if gradual, resulting from the time they spent together. It begins as a physical love but grows deeper and more spiritual. Whilst her love for Arnaud was brief and intense, Bertrande loved him because he displayed all the qualities that she hoped Martin would acquire when he returned and possibly more. ... Sanxi her first son represents many things including the evidence of her union between Martin and herself. He also provides a positive focus in Bertrande’s life especially through Martin’s absence. For Pierre Guerre she respects his loyalty and support, which forms and admirable kind of love in her times of need. Finally Bertrande values her morals and beliefs which is underlined by her need for the truth. ...
Bertrande’s love for Martin is gradual resulting from a combination of the time they spent together and the maturing of her body. ... ” For Bertrande she felt “no other sentiment” for Martin and this was reciprocated by his “mild gratitude” for leaving her alone.
