On September 11, 2001, I saw a city stand still in shock as two of its landmarks came crashing down. The city that never sleeps had come to a virtual standstill. ... The rest of the city looked on in paralysis as a scene unfolded before them, the likes of which had never even been contemplated. ... I saw people banding together, galvanized by the attack on their city to rise up and fight back. The people of New York City are heroes because they chose not to be beaten. ...
At this point, the people of the city of New York could have chosen to retreat or hide from the world, but they didn’t. They could have gone into a comatose state, and even now be returning to being a functioning city.
