Impact of the Colonization of Africa

Satellite remote sensing is a process that has been since its invention, and still is a successful and effective component in the field of geography, geomatics to be more specific. Though the type of remote sensing that is used commonly in this day and age is satellite remote sensing, the actual process of remote sensing does not bear its origin from the former. Its origin and the beginning of its use dates well back to ancient times. Technology today has permitted the invention of more sophisticated equipment and computers to allow remote sensing to take on greater tasks and open the doors to its powerful possibilities. This essay is going to take more of an historical approach to attempt to summarize the history of remote sensing, from when it originated until now; also to explain the relationship between remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) and some differences and similarities; also to describe certain available satellites or systems that use and remote sensing. The process of remote sensing, as already mentioned, is one that has been around for quite some time. However, its process of application has changed since it was invented, attributed to the advances in technology today. Remote sensing has been applied using a variety of ways, from taking aerial photographs from the top of a building, taking aerial photographs from a far distance from an airplane, to an even further distance from satellites which are used today to acquire digital remote sensing data to process into visual form. Writing about the history of a subject or a technology will not be complete without giving a definition for it. The definition of remote sensing is very simple and though it is associated with GIS, people have often mistaken one for the other. One definition of remote sensing is: “Remote sensing is the science and art of obtaining information about an object, area, or phenomenon through the analysis of data acquired by a device that is not in contact with the object, area, or phenomenon under investigation” .
