altogether delightful addition to ASV's French chamber music series, with stunning performances of both lovely Piano Quintets by the remarkable Louise Farrenc (1804-1875). ASV's series of French chamber music has over the years provided some delightful musical surprises (e.g. from Françaix - CD DCA 1090, Vieuxtemps - 1050, Damase - 898 or Lalo - 899), but none more so than this splendid new coupling of both Piano Quintets by 19th century Parisian Louise Farrenc, which will certainly increase our regard for unjustly neglected female composers. Admired by Berlioz and Schumann, Farrenc was an exceptionally talented musician, as pianist, teacher (she was the only female professor at the Paris Conservatoire for the whole century!), musicologist and, above all, composer. She wrote three symphonies, a vast amount of solo piano music and much highly distinctive and notable chamber music.
