Milwaukee County became a village in 1834. ... According to officer Ted Jansen, “Joseph Chaumier was appointed the village Marshall, thus becoming the first law enforcement officer in Milwaukee county “ (Ted Jansen, October 2002). ... By 1846, “Milwaukee had over 100,000 residents; therefore one Marshall was unable to hold the law alone. ... The police chief was paid eight hundred dollars a year, and thus became Milwaukee’s first police department” (Michael Krezewinski, 2000). “The first police department (Central Station) was located in the basement of a building on east Wisconsin Avenue. ... In 1890, the police force was comprised of a chief, an inspector, a captain, three lieutenants, nine detectives, three sergeants, and eight Roundsmen (who were in charge of night patrol details).
