Team Teaching in the primary school

In this essay I will be focusing on Learning and Teaching and Social Context to analyse my experience with a Primary 2 class at St Mary’s RC, Leith. I will be examining the concept of Team Teaching and considering the social factors involved throughout my discussion. Firstly, I will give a brief background to team teaching. Secondly, I will give a summary of my knowledge and understanding of team teaching, which I gained on placement. Lastly, I will weigh up the advantages and disadvantages to conclude that team teaching is very effective and has immense benefits for learning of the pupils, the teaching of the staff and the whole social context of the school.

A definition of team teaching put forward by Warwick states ‘A form of organisation in which individual teachers decide to pool resources, interests, and expertise in order to implement a scheme of work suitable to the needs of their pupils and the facilities of their school’ (Warwick, 1971: 18). The term “team teaching” can mean a variety of things from simply collaborating together with another member of staff to taking joint responsibility for the class, meaning the two teachers will teach and manage the one class together.

I will be focusing on collaborative teaching, as this is what I experienced on my placement. ... It is school policy not to allow the one teacher to teach the same subject for more than 2 years. ... They collaborated on every aspect discussing worksheets, teaching methods and children who would need additional help. The only subjects which were not planned together were the maths and the language, they were concentrated on separately by the individual teacher as they know more about that subject because they have been teaching it and therefore can plan their next lesson independently as they know the needs of the children at particular stages. ...

There are many advantages of this kind of team teaching. The main benefit is to the children as they get to experience a range of teaching styles, for example one teacher was very visual with lots on the board, worksheets etc whereas the other teacher was very vocal and encouraged as much discussion as possible.
