The Great Game of Business
In his book The Great Game of Business, Jack Stack describes how, in less than ten years, he and his colleagues at Springfield Remanufacturing Corp. turned a struggling business around, achieving a growth in sales from sixteen million dollars annually to more than eighty-three million. According to Stack, his only method in the generating such success was playing the great game of business. In order to play the game, Stack believes there are five tools that are essential to the Great Game kit. These five tools are the standards, the bonus program, the annual game plan, the communications process, and equity. These five tools are all essential in order to play the game successfully. But also vital, are the ten higher laws of business and the ultimate higher law that Stack and his colleagues reached for when it seemed the traditional ways of managing would not be effective. These five tools of the Great Game kit, combined with the ten higher laws of business and the ultimate higher law, create Jack Stack’s model of management.
Before Stack describes the five tools necessary to play the Great Game of Business, he first conveys why anyone should bother playing the game. ... ” Stack believes the most efficient way to operate a business is to give everybody in the company a voice in saying how the company is run and a stake in the financial outcome, good or bad. This is the essence of the game. ... But, like the first law states, you will only get out of the business what you put into it. By creating this “team” in your business, you are distributing knowledge and power throughout the company. ... This is the basic rule of the game. In order for the game to be played, these two things must be accomplished.
The purpose of this game is to eliminate the ignorance that Stack feels is so prevalent in so many businesses today. ... Getting rid of such ignorance is not easy because most people find business incredibly boring. This is why Stack created the game. He wanted to let people know they have the wrong idea about business and that it is no more complicated or boring than baseball or football. ...
This Great Game is not a gimmick. ... ” In order for the Great Game to be administered effectively, not as some publicity stunt, Stack describes the importance of open—book managers. ...
After mention of this sixth higher law, Stack begins to discuss the first of the five tools of the Great Game kit. ... Individuals can develop standards of his or her own in order to make the Game faster and more fun.
