The Hubble Space Telescope

Technology advances every day and scientists and Astronomers come up with better ways to view and understand what is going on in space. The best technological advancement to this day in space exploration has been the Hubble Space Telescope which is named after the great American astronomer Edwin Powell Hubble who changed our perceptions of the universe dramatically. Hubble was born in 1889 and died in 1953. Hubble came up with the largest telescope in the world of his time, which was the 100- inch hooker telescope which is located at the top of California’s Mt. ... Hubble’s greatest breakthrough was in 1924, where he measured the distance to a spectacular spiral shaped collection of stars in the Andromeda constellation and the Milky way. Hubble discovered that the distances of galaxies are related to their speeds in a special way, in that the farther away the galaxy is the faster it is moving away from us. Hubble’s discovery gave scientists a new way to measure the universe. ... Scientists and Astronomers felt the need for a more accurate and more refined telescope thus came the invention of the Hubble Space telescope named in honor of the Edwin Powell Hubble.

On April 24,1990 the shuttle Discovery was launched into space with a special mission: the Hubble Space Telescope. The telescope is a satellite that captures images of different things in space that can not be observed by the naked eye. The telescope orbits around the earth every 97 minutes at an altitude of 600 kilometers which is about 370 miles. It took from 1978 to 1990 to build and perfect the Hubble at a cost of $2 billion. The Hubble weighs in at a whopping 25,000 lbs, and measures 43ft long by 14 ft wide which is about the size of a school bus. The Hubble was designed for three basic purposes. ... Secondly, the Hubble was built for Ultra Violet Performance- which is the ability to produce ultra violet images and spectra. Finally, the third function of the Hubble is for High Sensitivity- which is the ability to detect very faint objects.
