The chapter opens in the church with Dimmesdale finishing off his sermon. After the sermon the audience goes out the doors and breaks into an applause and praise for Reverend Dimmesdale. At this point, Dimmesdale is at a peak in his life. It is then learned that Dimmesdale can no longer live with this regret and he will tell the truth to the people. He then walks out into the festive atmosphere to continue on with the procession to the town hall. The procession approaches the market place and Dimmesdale breaks off course towards the scaffold.
