This verse sets the tone of the song to be a pleading warning for the Desperado. The speaker also warns the Desperado against judging people on their appearance. This is shown in the second verse when the speaker warns against “the queen of diamonds” and urges the Desperado to trust “the queen of hearts” (ln 7-8). ... The queens also reflect the personality of the Desperado. From the warning the speaker gives, the reader can assume that the Desperado has been guilty of judging people on appearances in the past and has been hurt by it.
