In the Centre for Reform's second pamphlet, Identity and Politics, Michael Ignatieff and Sean Neeson discuss the role of identity in British politics. Michael Ignatieff argues that identity is essentially about values. He says, "This government is playing fast and loose in my judgement with the liberties of subjects". According to Ignatieff, Tony Blair "doesn't like what liberals actually stand for, which is liberating the citizen from an oppressive state." Ignatieff is particularly critical of New Labour's obsession with "modernisation", which he describes as "empty of content".
