Inequality and Education
In his chapter on inequality, Hudson claims that social inequality is a large problem for American democracy. ... While Hudson feels that inequality in nearly all respects is a major issue for our society, I feel that most of the inequality in our society can be traced back to unequal education. Therefore, I feel that rather than taking a broad approach to dealing with inequality, which may provide temporary solutions, we need to focus on eliminating inequality in education. ... While I agree that equality of condition is a noble goal, I believe it can be attained through equality of opportunity, especially in education. I feel that creating equal education for all people will lead to greater employment opportunities for all people, which in turn will lead to a more equal society. ... If nothing else, it can certainly be viewed as an obstacle for overcoming the inequality that already exists, as it is difficult for those people who cannot afford education to gain the skills needed for other occupations. ... While many people would advocate policies to ensure that post-secondary education is available to all people, many such policies already exist, yet they have not solved the problem of inequality. Minority scholarships, need-based financial aid, and numerous other opportunities for higher education exist, yet many people are unable to take advantage of them. Because of this, I feel that it is necessary to start earlier, with policies to ensure that public K-12 schools are able to provide an adequate and equal education to all people. ... Clearly, this environment is one that does not promote a healthy education, and it is presumably similar to the school environment in numerous other low income neighborhoods.
Although some of the problems in education are the result of societal influences, many of these issues could be corrected by giving money to schools in those areas that cannot afford to fund their own schools. ... In addition to federal spending, more federal regulation over the quality of facilities and the quality of teaching could ensure that money is being well spent to ensure proper education.
