STEREOTYPING: A Disease in Society Stereotyping is an issue that lies at the heart of social psychology, and our understanding of the stereotyping process has implications for many general issues including social cognition and perception, group processes, intergroup relations, social conflict and cooperation. It is often considered a “social disease” that existed in society, probably long before people exactly knew what “stereotyping” was. ... I’ve had my own share of being stereotyped most of my life, but the most common one I can remember since I migrated here in the US is the most common stereotyping that Asians in general experience is the “All Asians look alike syndrome”. ... “I’m sorry… I thought you were Japanese… you Asians look too much alike sometimes…” Since that time on, I became fully aware what stereotyping really is and how it can affect me or the people around me, not just in this one incident alone but with other different situations, varying in other aspects of my life.
