ARKANSAS by John Gould Fletcher

Arkansas: John Gould Fletcher. ... (Fayetteville: University of
Arkansas Press, 1989. ... )

John Gould Fletcher’s Arkansas, is a fascinating portrait of the evolution of the state: from the pre-Columbian era to Hernando Desoto’s early party of wilderness explorers to the era of industrialization that was necessitated by World War II and the demand for Bauxite ore found so abundantly in the region. Arkansas proves to be a state rich, not only in natural resources and agricultural products, but in history as well. ... Fletcher’s book is to elicit the potential reader’s attention toward an overview of Arkansas history, contained within its pages, that is most complete and concise. John Gould Fletcher writes in a lighthearted fashion that is easily understood and can be related to by the typical “Arkansawyer.”
The author, John Gould Fletcher was an Arkansas native that possessed a unique perspective of his home state. He was born in Little Rock Arkansas in 1886. He was, as stated in his text, the son of John G. Fletcher, who was noted as a prominent banker, confederate veteran, local philanthropist and leading citizen (336). The senior John G. Fletcher was born in a log cabin on the North Fork of the Saline River in 1831, just five years prior to Arkansas’s admission into the Union as the 16th slave state. We find that at the request of friends, the senior Fletcher entered the governor’s race to oppose Attorney General Jeff Davis in the 1900 gubernatorial race. ... John G. Fletcher was the son of Henry Louis Fletcher, who migrated to Arkansas from Tennessee and settled in the year 1825. The younger Fletcher became disenchanted with the pace of the “Arkansawyer” lifestyle and spent many years in Europe developing his skills as a poet. After returning to Arkansas, he won a Pulitzer Prize in 1938 for his poetic work, Selected Poems. No doubt, the Fletchers saw many changes take place in Arkansas over the course of their lives, which covered a period of 125 years.
