The origins of yoga and how it applies to us in modern society. How does yoga help relieve everyday stresses and does it really achieve a better figure?
"Ohmmm… " To most it does not mean a thing, but to others, it is the familiar chant of a Yoga practitioner (yogi). Ask anyone if they have heard of Yoga and they will say yes. But ask them again if they know what it means, most would not be able to explain what Yoga really is. You may have thought that Yoga is a form of meditation and breathing or even a religion! Most people have misconceptions and different ideas on what Yoga really is.
The Origins of Yoga
As mentioned in the book "Yoga for Dummies", the word Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning "union" or "integrating discipline". Yoga seeks to unite the mind, body and spirit. ... Yoga is not a religion, but a scientific methodology of the experience and integration of the mind-body-spirit. ...
Yoga dates back 5,000 years, to ancient India where the beginnings of Yoga were developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India. Yoga was slowly refined and developed by Vedic priests, who documented their practices and beliefs in the Upanishads, a huge work containing over 200 scriptures.
The Patanjali’s Yoga-Sûtra was written some time in the second century describing the path of raja yoga, often considered “classical yoga”. Patanjali systemized the practice of yoga into an “eight limbed path” which is the basis of modern yoga.
Ilyana Majeed, 24, Yoga Instructor, recalls when she was first learning about Yoga, "Initially, it was all a blur. I didnt realise that Yoga had so many branches and always thought it was all about meditation." Today however, having taught others she adds that Yoga is not only about postures and balancing, but about "knowing herself and being in the world."
Types of yoga
Within Yoga there are eight branches; each having its own unique character and path.
