Magnolia

Lets start with the obvious as I sit here typing away listening to the Magnolia soundtrack as we speak. ... Punch-Drunk Love almost came close, but, sadly, it didnt make me cry and laugh and smile and so forth and so on as much as Magnolia did. ... The film doesnt tell you anything about its main characters for the first ten or fifteen minutes of it. ... Its about odd little tales. ... Its like the Darwin awards in five minutes. ... In the shooting script for Magnolia, Paul Thomas Anderson opens with explaining how he wanted this film to be a short ninety minute flick that was personal and so forth. ... And to do this with music, well, its just bloody amazing. ... Its a moment where the characters are, well, "realer". ... Simply put, its not out of the ordinary in any way, its just, there. ... Its a necessity. ... And their best work can all be found in Paul Thomas Anderson films (Julianne Moore you might disagree with my comment, but, I cant seem to find a role where she is better than that of Linda Partridge in Magnolia). ... Where as Magnolia feels like something Anderson has done for himself. ... I hate differences and comparisons that are drawn between the two films since its unjust. ... Short Cuts isnt as close a film as Magnolia is. Its not as. ...

Magnolia is human (no sh[b][/b]it) and its perfectly directed and so forth. Yet, for me, its the stories it tells and the realism of it all (only really matched for me in the film [Safe]) that make it a worthwhile film. ... Ill close soon from Magnolia and move onto Boogie Nights and then Punch-Drunk Love.

Youre asking me why its my favourite movie? ... Well, that intersection is called Magnolia Street. From the beginning of writing the script, Anderson always wanted to call the film Magnolia, and he wanted something to happen at the intersection that is on Magnolia Street. ... Sure, its the whole "Christian religion thing", but, popular to contrary belief, [b]this is not a Paul Thomas Anderson idea[/b]. ... And you just go, so what youre telling me, basically, is that its raining frogs from the sky. ...

So then I began to decipher things about frogs and history, things like this famous notion that, as far back as the Romans, people have been able to judge the health of society by the health of its frogs. The health of a frog, the vibe of a frog, the texture of a frog, its looks, how much wetness is on it, everything. ... Its a daunting film that for the year it was released, it was the film to see because it was about porn. ... He was young (and still is, with only four films under his belt) and was melting themes, moods, characters and ideas all together with Sydney, or, internationally known as Hard Eight. ... A film which is probably more personal than Magnolia since its a film that is ultimately about Andersons upbringing. More than Punch-Drunk Love, Magnolia and Hard Eight. ... It starts off with a downbeat circus tune over darkness showing that the beginning of the film will be a little murky, a little dank, and then it opens with a bright blue fluro light pronouncing the films title and "Best Of My Love" playing, which shows a sort of new beginning, and then we go through the doors for this new beginning (of who, we dont know), and into the room where bright flashing lights and loud loud music boom and its dirty, its awful, its not right, its very hmm, this is the bulk of the movie explained right here, its not a great world to be in and youll get really fu[b][/b]cked up in it and youll lose yourself, and then theres light, and we find our "hero" for the film.
