William Carey spent years compiling an organizing information on world population groups in order to know how best to spread the gospel, "First, the inhabitants of the world according to this calculation, amount to about 731 millions; 420 millions of whom are still in pagan darkness; and 130 millions the followers of Mahomet; and 100 million Catholics; 44 million Protestants; 30 million of the Greek and Armenian churches; and perhaps 7 million Jews. ... William states his belief on the subject by saying, " it is well-known to require no very extraordinary talent to learn, in the space of a year, or two at most, the language of any people upon the earth, so much of its at least, as to be able to convey any sentiments we wish to their understanding."
