In June of 1950, President Truman responded to South Koreas desperate plea for help against the invading North Korean communists. ... Truman’s orders: to use American naval and air forces to attack North Korean military targets. Due to South Korea’s inability to withstand the North Korean attacks, American ground troops were deployed as well. By September 1950, over 210,000 UN ground forces were stationed in South Korea, 90% of these forces were comprised of US and South Korean troops. When Chinese volunteers entered the war through North Korea in late November, UN forces were pushed back into South Korea. ...
