This “nothingness” signifies that life is meaningless and there is no sense of morality. ... They, unlike the rest of society, find no meaning in the world, in God, or in religion. ... ’”(Hemmingway 93) The older waiter, in a way, finds a way to relate to the older man and shares his views on life. ... He drinks without spilling. ... It shows that the old waiter does not believe in God and indeed believes that there is “nothing” or no meaning to life at all. ... It masks the real problem, which is that there is no meaning or anything behind life, no morals or consequences. ... ”(Hemmingway 94) This is his philosophy on life. He finds no meaning in anything but a clean, well-lighted place is the only thing that can soothe his pain.
