1. Jing-mei decided to go against what her mother wanted, because she thought she was not a genius and did not enjoy being pressured into being one. She also doesn’t even try when the opportunity presents itself because she was determined to go against what her mother wanted and to not try. When a parent puts so much pressure on a child they might wind up making the child stop trying because they want the parent to be angry. She also doesn’t try because she is aware of her genius but does not feel it is the same genius that the mother sees. It is a different kind of one that she wont let her mother change. Jing-Mei also decides to insult her mother the worst way she can when she is forced to play the piano and says that she wishes she were one of her mother’s dead children. She did this as I said before to make her mother angry and make her feel miserable just as she had made her feel miserable and guilty for failing those constant tests she had been forced to take. This relates to human nature in that Jing-Mei wanted someone else to feel as badly as she did. Often its some sort of a comfort to have someone else feeling the same things that you do. The last decision she made that was important was her decision to not take the piano directly after it is offered to her. I assume this was because as she says it was, “a trophy that made me feels proud.” It makes her feel proud because it was a sign of forgiveness from her mother meaning her mother and her had come to terms with their differences in a way. Often after many years people realize the mistakes others have made and forgive them. In this case the mother forgives the daughter for the awful things she says. As the quote go’s, “Time heals all wounds” or it’s something like that I think. 2.C. I chose the most basic quote in this story. It means that in a first (or second) generation Chinese household you have to obey your parents. You cannot do what you think is best for you and “follow your own mind” because in fact you do not know what’s best for yourself.
