Johnny Got his Gun

Shocking and intense are the two words that describe my feeling about Johnny Got His Gun. This anti-war novel was written by Dalton Trumbo about two years before World War II. The story revolves around the protagonist of the novel, Joe Bonham, whose massive war wounds have made him a living corpse. Despite his intense suffering and agonizing struggle, Joe still desired to communicate his message and the horrific view of war. Through Joe Bonham, Dalton Trumbo reveals truths about the war that only some can manage. Throughout the novel, the reader can observe that the story was narrated solely through Joe’s memories and thoughts. The dialogues and descriptions that filled the novel occurred inside Joe’s head. This was because Joe had lost his senses of sight, taste, hearing, speaking, and smelling in the heat of battle. He also had his arms and legs amputated along with his face, nose, and throat.
