A Remembrance of Eden

In 1929, at the request of her daughter, 20 year-old Bailey Bullock Daniel began writing down the memories of her childhood that she had been telling her children and grandchildren for almost 60 years. Daniel describes everyday life on an Arkansas plantation. She sheds light on the plantation economy, medical practices, religion, slavery and sex roles in the period from 1849 until her marriage in 1972 (antebellum and postbellum periods). Dr. Bailey Webb, Daniel’s granddaughter, started the manuscript on its path toward publication. She also provided family photos and copies of the Daniel family letters. It was then put into the hands of Professor Robert Durden of Duke University, then Willard B. Gatewood, Jr. of the University of Arkansas, and finally to Margaret Jones Bolsterli who edited and wrote the introduction for this publication, A Remembrance of Eden.
