Patch Of Blue Review
Book Review
A patch of blue, Elizabeth Kata
White, blue, red, black, these are the only colours that Selina knows. Selina likes white, blue, red, but she hates black. Selina is an 18-year old girl who is blind and lives in a small apartment with her prostitute mother Rose-ann, and her alcoholic Grandfather - Ole pa.
Selina has spent her whole life living in the cramped apartment as a slave for her mother. She has very little hope, until one day she is taken to the park by a friend, Mr Faber. Selina is over joyed at being in the park
until she panics when she knocks over her beads. But then a stranger helps her. Its instant friendship between Gordon and Selina. Selina is as happy as ever. Although Happiness fades away when Rose-ann reveals her plans for Selina and the future. Selina then tries to plot an escape with Gordon. One day when Gordon was taking Selina home, tragedy strikes, a tragedy that Selina would never believe.
A patch of blue is a Reality Fiction, which explores the issues of Racism, abuse and relationships. It is a touching novel which will make you feel sympathy for Selina. The book has a twist at the end which you would not expect. This book is proof that a person should not be judged by their looks. I recommend this book to teenagers and older.
A patch of blue by Elizabeth Kata was originally published in 1961 as the title: Be ready with bells and drums. 171 pages long.
