How a bad habit develops

...
It is most likely that you too follow a bad habit routinely. A bad habit can be as innocent as a preschooler still sucking his or her thumb, somebody chewing on their fingernails, or somebody grinding their teeth. However, a bad habit can also have more serious effects on your health, such as taking in large amounts of caffeine, eating for emotional reasons, smoking cigarettes, or staying in an unhealthy relationship. People that are staying in a bad relationship, usually suffer from a poor self-esteem. ... A habit like hair twirling can be the result of dealing with nervousness or it might still be with you from your childhood, when you used this motion in place of a security blanket. Whatever kind of bad habit you might have, you probably did not anticipate it to take over your subconscious mind, leaving you powerless to break the pattern.
