Teen age Unemployment
The article from the Wall Street Journal, entitled, Urban Teen-agers, Who Often Live Isolated from the World of Work, Shun the Job Market, centers around a 19 year-old, by the name of Alex Perez, and the difficulties of people his age finding employment. Alex Perez is one of many people his age in urban areas, especially New York, who have been finding it more difficult to find employment. ... The biggest obstacle facing the growing teen-age unemployment is that they can’t find a job that fits their skills, because they lack skills that are needed. ... ” This makes Alex part of the decreasing labor force made up of teen-agers, but not part of the unemployment difficulties. ... Teen-agers are more often than not lacking many of the skills that employers are looking for, yet at the time, they have higher than minimum wage salary expectations. ... It is important to note that back in 1950, there was much less of a discrepancy between New York City’ teen-aged unemployment and the Nation’s. ... With extra incentives, a teen-ager would be more apt to find a job and not give up so easily.
