The Internet Copyright and Piracy issues in view of the regulation set by the Government of Singapore.

This essay will address how the Singapore Government deals with copyright and ethical issues pertaining to the Internet use in Singapore. Accessibility to cruise in the cyber info space and the use of email for correspondence has become a critical necessity in today's technologically driven world. With technology being improved in quantum leaps and with the growing affluence and globalization around the world, contents posted on the net has the ability to be passed on in a matter of seconds to any part of the world. As such, it is imperative that piracy and privacy issues are stipulated from the onset in any country. As such copyright laws are necessary to curb the software piracy problems. "Copyright law gives the owner of a work the right to prevent others from copying the work."

Singapore is no exception especially when ‘Singapore leads Asia in terms of internet penetration, with 47.5 percent of its population online.' When Internet first came to Singapore in 1991, ‘access was strictly limited to organisations with R & D interests.' Copyright law provides protection against all forms of "unauthorized reproduction, distribution and display of work of authorship" Thus Singapore deems it fit to have a copyright ‘…law, as it applies to other media, (which) also applies on the internet.'

In the year 1996, ‘Singapore's attempt to negate what was perceived as negative information about Singapore being aired over the cyber waves of placing government sponsored information on the popular world wide web' seemed a positive move to many in the region. In fact, Singapore's action led the charge to ‘regulate the internet in Asia' . With this in mind, the government felt that it had the ‘right to define "the limits of what is acceptable" when it comes to the choice and performance of newspapers, magazines etc and...
