Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel or “Coco” Chanel, as she was known as after becoming a café and concert singer for three years in her twenties, was a major contributor to fashions of the early 1900’s. Coco was born in 1883 in the town of Saumur, which is just outside of Paris, France. She lived with her mother and father, however when her mother died when Coco was only six years old, her and her four siblings were abandoned by their father to then be taken care of by her two aunts in Auvergne.
From the teachings of her aunts, Coco learned that “little girls should sew, sit up straight and speak politely” (Time), and because of these beliefs she was led into a life and love of design and fashion. ... With the two men’s help, they found customers among women of society and this helped Coco to expand her shops into Deauville.
